Rehearsal 3/3/15

Hi all,
Last rehearsal we made great progress in starting to balance out the different sections in the band. Most of this wad accomplished by several factors:
   - not over playing
   - "mf is a soft dynamic"
   - relaxing in the technical spots (triplets, runs, etc.)

This week I want to continue that work and progress with:

Resplendent Glory - we will apply everything we worked on to the end section
Cowboys
Where never Lark nor Eagle Flew

Thanks for your continued hard work. I look forward to seeing everybody next week

UPDATE:  Check out 19:10 and 19:30 in the Horns vs measures 172-173 in Cowboys.

Here is a link to Rick Wakeman's "Journey to the Center of the Earth"

This will make a good listen on a quiet cold night.

Rehearsal 2/10/15

Hi All,
On Tuesday we will run the entire program.  With a break next week this will give us a good look at where we are and what work we still need to do.  After that, we only have 8 more rehearsals before the concert on May 3rd.

Stay warm.

Ken

Rehearsal References

Here is a citation for the early instrumentation I mentioned.

INSTRUMENTATION AND THE NATIONAL SCHOOL BAND CONTEST

In the United States, instrumentation was particularly inconsistent in early school bands. After the initial National School Band Contest in 1923, discussion ensued during subsequent years to address this problem so as to provide a working standard for all band programs interested in entering the contest. In 1927 the School Band Contests booklet listed the following acceptable instrumentation for a 68-piece band:

2 flutes or 4 piccolos
   (interchangeable)
2 E-flat clarinets
2 oboes
1 English horn
24 B-flat clarinets
2 alto clarinets
1 bass clarinet
2 alto saxophones
   (or 1 sop., 1 alto)
1 tenor saxophone
1 baritone saxophone
1 bass saxophone
2 bassoons
2 B-flat cornets
2 B-flat trumpets
2 B-flat fluegelhorns
4 French horns
3 trombones
2 baritones
2 E-flat tubas
2 B-flat tubas
timpani
drums
